This claim is inaccurate. The figure is based on estimations of incomplete data and does not distinguish between statutory and \u201cpotential hidden homeless\u201d. The majority of the estimated latter represent non-dependent (adult) children living in the parental household. More accurate data may come from collection by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive or independent research.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To mark World Homeless Day on 10 October 2017, the Simon Community NI launched an awareness campaign that included posters with the claim that 100,000 adults in Northern Ireland have no home<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jim Dennison, the Chief Executive of Simon Community NI, said: \u201cThis alarming figure was highlighted in the latest Homeless Monitor for Northern Ireland, a report commissioned annually by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, University of New South Wales, and Heriot Watt University in Scotland.\u201d He added: \u201cThe reality is that as many as 136,000 adults in Northern Ireland are living without a home of their own, often sharing with family or friends, because they are often not seen or recorded on official statistics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This claim was repeated by the Simon Community in an online article<\/a>: \u201cDuring 2017, we highlighted that an estimated 100,000 adults in Northern Ireland are living in hidden homelessness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Statutory homelessness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Northern Ireland the body that is legally responsible for helping homeless people and preventing homelessness is the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE). It acknowledges that homelessness does not just refer to people sleeping on the streets. Its website advises<\/a>: \u201cEven if you have a roof over your head, you may still be homeless.\u201d It defines homelessness as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
