Discussion: “Telling stories with data”
DATE: Monday, 23 March 2020, 10.00am-12.00noon
VENUE: Accidental Theatre, 12 Shaftesbury Square, BELFAST, BT2 7DL
Numbers get bandied about the airwaves, but do journalists and others know if they’re accurate or even appropriate? Understanding basic statistics matters, because our public policy is supposed to be driven by evidence. But if decision makers and the public don’t comprehend the data being rigorously collected, what’s the point?
Join us for an introductory conversation to discuss the importance of using data in telling news and other stories. Journalists and policy makers will share their experiences. A representative from the Northern Ireland Statistics Research Agency will explain their work and how they can help.
You won’t become an instant data journalist, but you’ll gain an appreciation of the value of good data in telling stories.
