FactCheckNI is disappointed to learn of Meta’s decision to end its partnership with fact checking organisations in the US.
Having been involved with the programme since 2019, FactCheckNI is particularly concerned with accusations of bias and censorship against fact checkers. Like other organisations on the programme, we exist to improve public debate and work under the fundamental principles of impartiality, transparency and accuracy. Adherence to those principles is regularly and thoroughly externally audited. Our expertise and commitment to accurate and accessible information matters in a period of information overload.
Equating facts with opinions undermines public confidence, increases apathy, and reduces participation in democratic processes. Misinformation and deliberate disinformation places another hurdle between people and the accurate information and data they need to understand the world around them and make informed decisions. Our work looks at claims made in parliaments, the press, and manifestos, as well as social media. Neither misinformation or disinformation add anything positive to public debates and discussions – their effect is entirely corrosive.
FactCheckNI will continue its important work, knowing the impact accurate and nuanced information has on us all in our day to day lives and to support everyone in Northern Ireland, and beyond, to this end.
